Can Meditation Minutes Be an Immersive Experience?
A note from Aja on how to get the most out of Meditation Minutes, inspired by last month's Harvard Business Review article on immersive experiences.
By Aja Humm
Immersive experiences are everywhere right now, and I understand why. Light shows, sound baths in old churches, projections that wrap around you from floor to ceiling, whole rooms built so that you can step inside a painting or a forest or a galaxy for an evening.
People love them, and I love them too. There is something wonderful about walking into a space that has been designed to move you.
But here is the thing I keep coming back to. Every one of those experiences is still happening inside you.
The room can be as spectacular as it wants, but the wonder itself is created by your own mind, your own senses, your own imagination doing what it does best. Which means you already carry everything you need to have the same visions, or even more incredible ones, simply by closing your eyes and letting your imagination take you somewhere.
No (expensive!) ticket or travel required.
Now, I am not saying you should skip the big event with your friends, your family or your colleagues. Please go. Shared experiences like that can strengthen bonds and make a group feel more united, and honestly that is what team building is all about anyway, right?
So, go and enjoy it fully will you?!
What I do not want is for you to miss out on your own inner world in the everyday, in between the special occasions. Because the cool thing about that world is that you always have access to it.
It travels with you to the office, to the train, to the kitchen table at eleven at night. Nobody can sell it out or close it for renovation.
The challenge is that when we are in our efficient, get things done mode, which is where most of us live during the workday, our brains are running on fast gamma waves.
That state is fantastic for answering emails and making decisions, but it does not open the door to that inner world. The door is there, it is just more hidden behind some giant oaks, and we tend to rush past it.
This is exactly why I started creating Meditation Minutes.
My job is to help you quickly lower your brain frequencies so that your creative mind wakes up and can take you on a ride. I use my violin, my voice, improvised and brain frequency benefitial music and the sounds of nature to build a little bridge from where you are to where you could be.
And the good news is that it only takes a few minutes to cross it.
If that's not the power of mind, I honestly do not know what is!!
So, what can you expect on the other side of that bridge? People tell me different things, and I have felt many of them myself.
Problems that seemed stuck suddenly loosen and answers appear that were not there before (this happens a lot when I practice the violin, and hahaha so did exactly Einstein too!).
Also, new energy, the kind you get from a really good power nap. A sense of the mind expanding, of seeing possibilities that were hiding in plain sight. Sometimes it is simply the relief of allowing yourself a moment of kindness addressed to you.
And here is my favourite part, because it is the part that rewards you for showing up.
Like any other sport or skill, the more you listen to these soundtracks, the quicker your body and mind learn to relax and receive the benefits.
The first time might feel a little unfamiliar, and that is completely fine. The tenth time your shoulders will drop before the first sound has even finished.
It is like putting money into an index fund (also smart thing to do I have learned!). You do not need to watch it every day, you just keep contributing, and with time and a little patience it grows almost without you noticing until one day you look and think, and hopefully celebrate, "oh, that is a lot more than I put in."
So this is my suggestion. Enjoy the spectacular experiences out there whenever they come your way, and in the meantime, give yourself a few minutes each day to visit the one you carry with you always. Press play, close your eyes, and let your imagination do what it has always known how to do.
I will be right there with you, with the violin in my left hand!
With warmth and encouragement,
Aja
